Fourth Place

Posted by Phil Aaronson at 10:39 AM

Jonathan Crowe created DFL to celebrate the last place finishers at the Olympics. DFL stands for Dead F***ing Last, meaning they finished last. The key word being, "finished". DNF by the way stands for Did Not Finish. I can relate, but I can't help feeling that the real stories are with the fourth place finishers. To be the fourth best in the world is a mighty achievement, but given the amount of attention they receive, you'd never know it.

Good thought. Last place either is likely someone who had an accident or who knew they wouldn't place highly. It's probably the 4th place finisher who loses more sleep over the little things that could have been different.

I like what they do at junior track nationals. Medals go only three deep, but 4th and 5th are also recognized on the podium. 4th may not look as good on the racing resume, but at least you are in the photo :).
